There are times in our lives when we all have to undergo property renovations, but you don't always expect to make a discovery when ripping up old carpet. For one couple, they had the shock of their lives when they discovered something hidden quite literally under their feet.

The couple, who go by the name of the Mill House Renovation on TikTok, recently revealed their find online after doing a little DIY at the property. It's mad what you can find when you put the work in and start ripping out old materials and furniture when you're making over a home.

It's not the first time people have made such a discovery either. Just days ago, another couple admitted something stunning was lying underneath their carpet.

  • 'I bought jewellery box at charity shop and couldn't believe what was inside'
  • Husband rips out bathroom while wife is on holiday and everyone says same thing

The couple, who post from Ripponden, in Yorkshire, said: "It was one year ago when we knew we had an original floor hiding under an old carpet."

In the video, they explained it took them a year to make the discovery, but they soon worked to clean it up. The patterned tiles are amazing, and it makes such a difference to see it uncovered.

Many admitted the floor is "beautiful", and some couldn't fathom why it was covered up. In the end, it was assumed this may be linked to the heating, and staying warm.

One person said: "Omg, I would be so happy to find that." Another added: "That really is spectacular."

A third replied: "Beautiful. You're very lucky." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Gasp! The beauty and craftsmanship."

Someone else also chimed in with: "It's so beautiful. It may have been a lot of work, but it must be so satisfying to look down at this in the morning."

Some comments also suggested the floor may have been made with Minton floor tiles, which were popular in the 19th-century. Now, they can be worth a lot of money depending on their design, condition and rarity.

If you find any sort of old flooring under carpet, it's advised you remove the carpet and padding and then inspect the condition of the subfloor for rot or damage. You should then use a professional cleaner or a strong degreaser to remove any adhesive residue.

From here, you can sand and refinish the floor to your liking. You could also replace any damaged boards. However, you must act with caution.

Before you get to work, it's wise to get the old carpet underlay tested for asbestos, especially if the house is older. This should be done before any other modifications are carried out.

None the less, people thought the floor shared in the video was particularly amazing. Under the video, another person said: "Like winning the lottery."

One more added: "Why would anyone cover up such a beautiful floor? Well done for uncovering it!"
